Big deal?
The corporate media got very excited over the Romney endorsement by the Des Moines Register. Wow! First Republican to be endorsed by Des Moines Register since Nixon in 1972. Could this be a harbinger of things to come?

What struck me about the excitement over the endorsement is the fact that the Des Moines Register is now owned by Gannett. (They own USA Today and lots of other papers.)

So all the hoopla over the Iowa newspaper endorsing Romney was simply an indication that Gannett also suffers from Romnesia! The talking heads never bothered to point out that Gannett owned the Register. And, oh, yes, the New York Times endorsed Obama in a thoughtful editorial. Any similarity between the Des Moines Register and the New York Times is purely coincidental.

Unfortunately, I seem to live in a newspaper wasteland! I bought (paid money for) yesterday's Wisconsin State Journal, only to find out they endorsed tired old Tommy Thompson over Tammy Baldwin. Guess I won't be buying THAT newspaper again. Then we are surrounded by Gannett rags in Marshfield and Wausau. I guess I will have to check out the Eau Claire newspapers to see if any of them are reasonably good. (I do subscribe to several online newspapers, including my favorite, the Cap Times, as well as the Ashland Current, the NY Times, the Washington Post, and others.)

Don't waste your money on the Eau Claire paper, Linda, if you're looking for fair and balanced. Its editor occasionally writes an opinion that makes some middle of the road sense, but mostly the paper is right-leaning. Eau Claire County Republican Party chairman, Brian Westrate seems to have a prominent, unopposed forum any time there's comment to be made on any controversial issue. 'Nuff said.

Sigh! Why am I NOT surprised? But I would like to find a newspaper with a more "local" take on the news -- we live about halfway between Wausau and Eau Claire. Oh well, I will keep on looking for something, anything (but not Gannett!).
