So, what is the Democratic Party in Wisconsin?
Full-page ads in both Madison newspapers urged Governor Doyle to stop the deregulation of our environment. The list of signatories opposing Assembly Bill 655 is a who's who of the environmental protection community. Citizens for Safe Water, 1,000 Friends of Wisconsin, Citizens Utility Board, Clean Wisconsin, Trout Unlimited, Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and many more.

They joined the voices of the Attorney General, former DNR Secretary George Meyer, former Public Intervenor Tom Dawson, and former governor and senator Gaylord Nelson, but Doyle and his chief negotiator Marc Marotta thumbed their noses at this impressive list. Doyle incredibly praised the bipartisan support for legislation that he says "will better protect our air and water."

Steve Walters, writing in the Milwauke Journal Sentinel observed, "Some found a touch of irony in Tuesday's vote. Leaders of construction and business groups had not been able to get the changes approved under Republican governors McCallum and Tommy Thompson. Instead, the changes were negotiated under Doyle, the first Democratic governor in 16 years."

Democrats who stood up to Doyle/Marotta/Panzer and WMC are: Carpenter, Decker, Risser, Chvala, Robson, Moore.

Those who lost their way? Breske, Coggs, Erpenbach, Hansen, Jauch, Lassa, Meyer, Plale, and Wirch.

If the Democrats in the Legislature can't stand with those who work every day to protect our enviornment, what is a Democrat?
