Another surprise
Those who fought tooth and nail to stop the proposed extension cord from Manitoba to Duluth to Wauau were thrilled when Jim Doyle was elected and declared "a new day" in Wisconsin. Governor McCallum and his predecessor unabashedly favored the line and the utlity companies that love it. Ave Bie, then chair of the PSC, stood next to McCallum when he announced his support despite the fact that the proposal was before the PSC.

But the celebration of a "new day" was premature. Doyle appointed Burnie Bridge, his long-serving Deputy Attorney General, to chair the PSC. Do you think she knew what the governor wanted? Well, the Democrats are indeed different. Instead of the governor announcing his support with the chair of the PSC at his side, the PSC chair announced her support and the governor quickly announced his approval! The December 18 headline in the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram: "Doyle supports power line." Well, I'll be.
