Go to the corner!
The Bush-Cheney-Rice-Gates team is not in line for a gold medal in Georgia. The pronouncements emanating from the White House remind me of Peter Sellers in The Mouse That Roared. You may recall the plot. A tiny country, in need of foreign aid, got an idea. Declare war on America, surrender, sue for peace while accepting monetary aid. Brilliant. In this case the great big super-power roars at Russia and sues for peace.

Bush has admitted that Russia (with all its oil) has re-established itself as the dominant force in its neighborhood. But look out Putin! Bush told the world that "bullies" are out of step with this century. (He should know!) One of his spokesmen said, and I'm not kidding, "There will be a time and a place to deal with the consequences and repercussions of Russia's actions." You know, go to the corner; no more trips to Crawford or Camp David; no more flattering comments on Putin's book cover; and Bush may yet dim the national Christmas tree lights or go exclusively with tinsel--no lights--to remind the nation of dark days in Georgia.

And with furrowed brow, "The Decider" said, "Only Russia can decide whether it will now put itself back on the path of responsible nations or continue to pursue a policy that promises only confrontation and isolation." Sad note. Change "Russia" to the "United States" and he might gain some credibility.

And Gates says, with school principal charm, "There must be consequences." (For Gitmo? Shock & Awe? Lying to justify the invasion of Iraq? Consequences--impeachment perhaps? Tell it to Pelosi.)

Mercer, Inc., pension advisers wish that they had not visited Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Milwaukee County is suing Mercer for its advice in the Milwaukee pension fiasco. The demand is for a tidy sum--100 million bucks. And Mercer is suing the Milwaukee lawyers. A spokesman for the Reinhart Boerner firm said, "Mercer's claims are totally false, totally malicious. Reinhart had absolutely nothing to do with the design or estimating the cost of the benefit." In his view, this "was a desperate ploy" by Mercer.

Sure did ruin a nice weekend.

Disclosure: I listened to Rush Limbaugh for 10 minutes. Here is the line, and I'm not making it up. Bush was totally unprepared for the Russian attack. Totally. But that shows just how on top McCain is, because he talked daily with the president of Georgia. Rush became hard to follow on the question of McCain's view of the "foolish" Bush administration guidance to calm the Georgians. I surmise that Limbaugh was ambivalent about the Georgian suicidal policy but I couldn't take anymore and switched to Air America.

Ah, but not to worry, supercilious Lindsey Graham and McCain tutor Joe Lieberman have been sent to Georgia. For what? Only John, Lindsey and Joe know.

Memo to Condi--stop finger-wagging at the Russians.
