Because he can afford to.
With those words, Russ Darrow, used and new car dealer, entered the race for the United States Senate. I'm not kidding. He said, "I'm running because I can afford to." Could there be a more succinct and powerful commercial for need for public financing of campaigns? Almost forgot the second reason he is running and announcing on 9/11: "I am very patriotic." Really, now. Isn't that special? I don't know Russ Darrow from any other car dealer, but all our subscribers need to know is that his key advisor is Bob Kasten. For catchy slogans, he also has Scott McCallum on the team. Scott was the one who informed us that the real big spenders are local officials. The only question I have of Russ Darrow is why in the world would you grab the two most discredited living pols in Wisconsin and put them in your showroom? Kasten and McCallum. And my "heads up" to you--get ready for a Kasten special. That means lots of dirt flying on your TV screen. One possibility: "Vote for Darrow. He doesn't believe in civil liberties. He supports Bush and Ashcroft."
