He doesn't get it!
In today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "A Doyle spokesman said that if Troha is convicted, contributions tied to him would be returned." Think about it, governor. What happened to the smell test? When a supporter offers to pay for your innaugural party through an elaborate plan involving the Boys and Girls Clubs, after donating tens of thousands of dollars to your campaign, were you, was your staff, was anyone just a little bit suspicious?

Did anyone say, "How nice of the Troha family to donate so much money"? Did anyone say, "Golly governor, do you think Dennis Troha has a motive in giving so much money to your campaign," or is it all about his belief in good government? Your position on stem cell research? Did anyone on your staff say, "Jim, we had better be very careful because you know Troha is a major investor in the Kenosha casino project"?

When the indictment was announced, did your chief-of-staff say, "Send back every cent?" If not, governor, you need a new staff.

During the Doyle campaign, whenever a question arose about a questionable donation, a Doyle spokesperson would say "ridiculous" or "outrageous" or...fill in the blank. Now the mantra is "if convicted." What? In three years?

Now is the moment. We must have publicly financed campaigns. Would a saint have turned down the funds from the Troha family? I don't know but Bob and Phil La Follette would have. Ah, yes, the smell test.
