Message to Russ and Herb
Listening to WPR and the tepid response from Russ Feingold to the Scalia II nomination to the Supreme Court, I had to ask myself if anyone could be nominated for any position that would convince our two senators to take the lead in opposition? (Kohl wouldn't answer the phone so his response was in writing!) If the Democrats controlled the White House and Russ were nominated for the Supreme Court, James Sensenbrenner would go nuts. The rightwing-neocons in the Senate would rip him apart.
But when Bush nominates a neocon, activist, Scalia/Thomas type to the court one can almost hear Russ's hands wringing on the radio. Our two votes on Judiciary Committee will "study" and "listen" and then, like Solomon, make a decision. C'mon! When Pat Robertson, Dobson, and all the neocons are dancing in the streets, cracking open the bubbly, and are talking about reversing Roe v. Wade, Brown v. Board of Education, and our environmental protections as global warming threatens life on this planet, it is time for, dare I mutter the word, leadership.
We cannot let this nominee be confirmed. Tepid and "we will ask tough questions in the hearing" won't cut it. More listening sessions in Wisconsin won't cut it. You two must take the lead. Don't leave it to Barbara Boxer. The right wants to frame this as a fight over abortion and nothing else. You know better. It is Civil Rights, church and state, vouchers vs. public schools, EPA, eminent domain, living wages, the rights of the disabled.
This is the moment of truth. If you had a reason for seeking your Senate seats, this is the test. Punt on this one and you will share the shame for decades of a neocon majority.
