Portage County Dems respond to Doyle
You have to wonder what the governor was thinking. He jumps into the Democratic primary in the 24th Senate District on the side of a newcomer against a woman who has been elected three times by ever increasing margins. In 2002, Julie Lassa garnered 73 percent of the vote.

In the midst of a defamatory, oversized postcard attacking Lassa, sent by Todd Rongstad, who is currently in contempt of court, and despite Congressman Dave Obey's call for Lassa's opponent to fire his Milwaukee-based consultants after a particularly obnoxious and inaccurate TV commercial, Doyle did what Democratic governors never do. He endorsed in a primary.

Reaction? In a precedent setting decision, all 13 members of the Portage County Democratic Party's executive committee condemned the Doyle endorsement and individually endorsed Julie Lassa for state Senate.

The gleeful Republicans quickly pointed out that the Paul family had contributed $37,000 to Doyle for Governor.

Other Dems from around the state have contacted FightingBob.com. One said, "Hey, if Doyle decides primary endorsements are OK, why should anyone else hold back?" Odd start for the leader of the Democrats.
