Crooks? Maybe, but we need the jobs
In what can only be described as incredible testimony, the secretary of Transportation in the Doyle administration, Frank Busalacchi, pleaded for the bid-rigging highway companies on the grounds that "good-paying jobs, with good benefits" could be lost if the law breakers are punished too severely. He worried about the 800 workers at the two companies. (Wouldn't they be hired by the replacement companies? C'mon.)

Rep. Dean Kaufert, co-chair of the Joint Finance Committee, seemed sympathetic. The MJS reported Kaufert's remarks, "I don't want to see you go out of state."

Lemme see. We justify the crippling of environmental protections by calling it a "jobs creation bill." For years they justified the Crandon mine because it would create jobs. Every tax break in the past ten years has gone to big business. Why? Jobs, of course. Now, we hear that bid-riggers should be allowed to continue because of, you guessed it, "JOBS". Where are we Toto?
