Marcia Coggs
Marcia Coggs died Wednesday. The MJS caught the essence of her life: "In every way but height, former state Rep. Marcia Coggs stood tall." Few people have had the impact that she had on the city of Milwaukee and the state Legislature. She was the first African American elected to the Legislature, the first to sit on the Joint Finance Committee, and was known as the "Conscience of the State of Wisconsin."

One nephew, Leon Young, serves in the state Assembly as has another, Spencer Coggs, who also ousted Gary George and now serves as a state Senator. Spencer said, "Our community has lost a real giant politically, socially and spiritually."

I recommend reading the entire story on a fantastic legislator, a great leader, and a woman with a social conscience. Her work will live on.
