Heart warming Wolfy
Turns out the guy many think was the most responsible for the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and thus the death of 3,400 U.S. soldiers and as many as one million Iraqis, Paul Wolfowitz, is a romantic at heart. The NYT reports that Wolfy's female companion had worked at the World Bank while he was deputy defense secretary. They met and, I'm not making this up, "The two shared an interest in spreading democracy in the Middle East, especially Iraq."
Despite that romantic story of two people meeting and falling in love over plans to spread democracy, she was no romantic. She was, according to Wolfowitz, furious at the Bank's conflicts of interest rules that forced her to leave and join the State Department. How furious? She hired a lawyer and was prepared to sue! Thus, romantic Paul negotiated a salary of $193,000 tax-free for her but, in reality, it was not for her or her companion but to save the World Bank from costy litigation.
And, apparently, Wolfy's companion found a lawyer to put forth such nonsense. Whoa Nelly! I have heard a lot of creative ideas for lawsuits, but this is the topper. C'mon Paul, do everyone a favor and get out of Dodge.
