That was close!
By the thinnest margin, the House passed the supplemental war appropriations bill 218-212. David Obey took the lead and did a magnificent job in garnering the necessary votes. He deserves the credit.
I am sure that most of you would have been in the "out now" caucus. You were well represented by Tammy Baldwin and Gwen Moore who voted for the less-than-perfect supplemental. I'm glad they did. There are not enough votes to end the war now but the process has begun and it will gain momentum.
Face it, Mr. Bush, it is over and you lost. You lied to get us in, you lied to keep us there, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians are on your conscience. You may veto this bill but you no longer have, as Obey put it, a "rubber stamp" Congress.
While the mainstream media struggles to convince us that the "surge" is working, it isn't. Meanwhile, an entire unit of Marines has been ordered out of "the good war" in Afghanistan for allegedly killing civilians at random.
I must laugh at the rightwing attacks on setting a deadline. "Micromanaging" is the charge. That would suggest there is some macromanaging in place.
I see sunshine on the horizon but the pressure must continue to end this fiasco or it will cloud over in a hurry.
