Letter on: McChesney on media

“As we move swiftly toward a totally paperless information transfer system, with the resultant profusion of information inputs of unknown authenticity, I wish to offer a quote from Henry D. Lloyd's book WEALTH AGAINST COMMONWEALTH. In this book he attempted to alert the American public regarding the concentration of wealth and the subsequent control of the information and of the government.

"Indeed, it is doubtful if free government can long exist in a country where such enormous amounts of money are allowed to be accumulated in the vaults of corporations, to be used at discretion in controlling the property and business of the country against the interest of the public and that of the people, for the personal and aggrandizement of a few individuals."

This book was printed in 1899.

I only hope that the promise of the electronic information transfer is realized.”

Letter on: Obama's MacArthur?

“To all the federal, state and Municipal workers
who are getting free or partially lower health
insurance and who object to the Obama Health
Plan, why should the people who pay taxes also
thru taxes pay for their Health plan?
Why should there be for profit Health Insurors?
Insurance companies should be mutual insurers
where the insured are the stock holders.
You shouldn't be treated by the for profit
as a piece of meat making monies on unfortunate
illnesses.”

Letter on: Egad!

“Pacifica radio sources have been reporting on how Pritzker was directly involved in the prime mortgage push at the banks she was associated with (and bailed out from) in Chicago ten or more years ago.

The report by Dennis Bernstein is available at Consortiumnews.com. Consortium news is run by Robert Parry who did the major investigative reporting on what became Iran/Contra.

If there was ever a reason to move forward a boycott against Hyatt, the latest firings and the Pritzker background should confirm it.”

Letter on: United Nations Model

“The model UN days were no more than a classroom exercise to get students to think and interact using the information they had at hand and what they might do. No matter which country they would represent, the approach was always based on an American student using American perceptions, insights and experience. The real UN represents groups of people diversified in language, culture, economies, history, attitudes, beliefs, suspicions, etc. There is no way any American student can embody what a downtrodden, developing people may bring to the table or the fears and suspicions an oppressed people may feel toward a superpower. We might be able to think we can solve problems from an American viewpoint. It would seem the challenge to resolving problems and conflicts is to do so from the experiences of others.

To understand a man/woman, you've got to walk a mile in his/her shoes, whether they fit or not.”

Letter on: What recession?

“I know folks who work at WPS Insurance in Madison and who earn no more than $13 an hour. After taxes this is about $10. They do get fair enough health insurance coverage but still are short at the end of each month to meet expenses. People at the low end of the scale can only dream of having enough for a night out with friends or a movie or sufficient funds for a vacation.

To put the median income is of $50,000-51,000 into perspective, median means half are below and half are above. When you make only $13 an hour there are no dreams, only nightmares. Amazingly, WPS is a union shop.

Why is American business so niggardly? Isn't it time for workers to unite and regain control of the workplace and their lives?”

Letter on: Here we go!

“Sheeesh Ed, there you go again. Don't you find it somewhat ironic that for all of Rick Berg's right-wing blathering about how bad government is that he works part-time for the Wisconsin State Treasurers office, drinking from the much loathed public trough?

Kind of makes you wonder doesn't it?”

Letter on: Tea for two?

“I'll take your word that the Journal Sentinel didn't cover BobFest, but I need to say that the State Journal actually did carry coverage of it. There was a story on page D4 of the Sunday paper, the day after the festival, and the piece was written by our reporter, Shawn Doherty.
While it's true that Shawn works for The Capital Times and not the State Journal, the two organizations have been increasingly collaborating in different areas over the past year or so. In this case, State Journal City Editor Phil Brinkman and I agreed in advance that Shawn would cover BobFest and would make a story available to them run, which they did.”

Letter on: Wendell Potter

“Yeah, let's privatize the Milwaukee County Zoo. Privatization is g-o-o-o-d. Look at Congress. It's been privatized for decades.”

Letter on: Mad as Hell?

“I believe that the Assembly majority Democrats announced earlier this week the outlines of their agenda for the September legislative session, which included public financing of Supreme Court elections.”

Letter on: Bernie Sanders

“As these speeches get posted I am still anticipating Greg Palast's closer to the Bobfest event.”

Letter on: What a day!

“Congress needs to pass health care reform now, because we cannot do without, the insurance are greedy.”

Letter on: We raised the dough

“State Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman deserves the harshest punishment.”

Letter on: Start over!

“After watching the President's speech I then watched the Michael Moore film SICKO.

Maybe we should start the debate again and this time totally ignore the voice of the Republicans. The only time the Republicans talk of conducting bipartisan discussion is when they are out of power.

I believe in single payer Medicare for all or at the least the same medical services offered the detainees at Guantanamo. Maybe we can institute a medical tourism industry with travel to Cuba for health care. I am certain that the insurance companies have already checked this out.”

-Richard Kanak | Cherry Valley, Illinois | September 10, 2009

Letter on: Start over!

“I've never been impressed by Republicans. After last night's speech by the president, the heckling and the Republican rebuttal, I now know why...

Maybe the secret to getting anything done in congress, including healthcare reform, is to make the changes and then let Republicans have full credit. They never seem content with the ideas of others and they certainly seem to pout or whimper enough when things don't go their way. Sort of reminds me of a spoiled child or that malcontent on the other side of the cubicle where we work.”

Letter on: Now it's Obama’s unjust war

“We need to get out of Afganistan and Iraq, no question about that. With respect to building their economies and infrastructures I say no. Those resources need to be used at home and I don't mean more bank bailouts, either.

Out entire military establishment is an exercise in insanity. Doesn't anyone else see this?”

Letter on: Thanks Tom Petri

“Sorry Ed, but the actions of Mercury Marine weren't thinly veiled union busting, they were blatant as all hell.

Wouldn't it be refreshing for a change if characters like Doyle, Petri, the Fond du Lac County Exec, etc. sat down and went over the property tax bills and state documents and found out how many preferments Mercury Marine got over the years and sent them a bill that had to be paid before they pulled up stakes and left town. Given the nature of government today and how it coddles businesses on the pretext of job security there must have been a nice little bundle of goodies doled out over the years.

That also brings up the matter of the press in all this. Why didn't anyone in the press check that out? Where is the fair and balanced reporting here? All I saw was a lot of people essentially saying the union should cave and a lot of working people dividing against each other. Somehow the idea that union labor is taking something away from other working people has to end. Right now it seems working people are fighting each other to see who can take a hit instead of who can get ahead. Nuts huh?”
